San Gimignano

We got another break today by leaving the hotel at 9:30.  It’s another beautiful day! The slowed down pace of this tour has been wonderful!  We drove towards San Gimignano and then we got dropped off to hike the final three kilometres into town.  The views were absolutely spectacular!!!  We had amazing views of San Gimignano as we approached the town.

Our reward at the end of the hike was a visit to one of the best Gelato shops in Italy!  They have won numerous awards and our sweet Laura treated us!  I actually tried champagne flavour and it was delicious!

We had about three hours of free time to explore this picturesque town and get some lunch, and, of course, to do some shopping.  About ten of us were brave enough to climb the 218 steps to the top of the bell tower where we had wonderful panoramic views of the town and the Tuscan countryside. It was well worth the climb!  Quite a few extra bags came back onto the bus as this town had great shops!

Next we drove a very scenic route to Volterra, a beautiful Etruscan town situated high up on the top of a hill. Laura led us to the lookout where we could see view the excavation site of the ancient Roman theatre.  Then we had an hour to check out the area, including a local market that was being held in the main square.

It took us about an hour to travel back to Siena.  We travelled on some very winding roads but the scenery was amazing!  We got back to the hotel at 5:30 and we were on our own for dinner.  I think it will be an earlier night for most as we have an early start tomorrow.
